When shipping from China to Nigeria by sea, your shipping fee is mainly determined by two things:

  • The gross weight of your cargo (how heavy it is), and
  • The volume of your cargo (how much space it takes up in the container).

Freight forwarders and shipping companies calculate costs based on CBM (Cubic Meter) or weight, whichever is higher — this is called the chargeable weight

Key Factors That Affect Sea Shipping Fees

  1. Container Type (LCL or FCL)
    • LCL (Less than Container Load): You share container space with other importers and pay only for the space you use.
    • FCL (Full Container Load): You rent the entire container — perfect for bulk shipments.

2. Volume And Gross Weight

  • Volume Or CBM Formula: Length (1m) × Width 1(m) × Height (1m) = CBM
    For example, if your box measures 1.2m × 1m × 1m = 1.2 CBM and the rate is $180 per CBM, your cost will be 1.2 × $180 = $216.
  • Gross Weight: Gross weight refers to the total weight of your goods, including packaging. This matters because some items are small but very heavy (like machinery or batteries). Freight companies compare your CBM and weight to determine which is higher — because heavy goods increase fuel usage and affect container capacity
  • Conversion Rule (for sea freight): 1 CBM is usually considered equal to 1,000 kg (1 ton) So if your cargo or goods is 2 CBM and weighs 1,200 kg → You’ll be charged by 2 CBM (since 2 CBM > 1.2 tons) 3 CBM and weighs 4,000 kg → You’ll be charged by 4 tons (since 4 tons > 3 CBM)

3. Port of Loading and Destination


The choice of port in China (like Guangzhou, Shanghai, or Ningbo) and destination in Nigeria (Apapa, Tin Can, or Onne) affects cost due to handling fees and distance.

4. Type of Goods


Fragile, hazardous, or oversized goods cost more due to extra packaging and handling requirements.

5. Shipping Season and Route


Shipping costs fluctuate during peak seasons (like before holidays) and depend on the shipping route chosen.
